In Hacer Lugar, Studio Lenca looks at landscape through his experiences of displacement. He is interested in the ways people relate to the places they remember, and how they recall what those landscapes looked like. These might be places they once lived in and have since left behind.

‍

‍

Flowers are small parts of these landscapes, but they can carry many meanings. They can be admired, smelled, mark a place, or remind us of something.

For this activity, you are invited to spend a few minutes looking closely at a flower and translating what you see into a line drawing. There is no need to make a perfect picture. Instead, notice its shape, direction, movement, texture, and the spaces around it.

Like a garden, your work will be displayed alongside everyone else’s. The work will grow through the participation of many different people. Each contribution will be different, and together they will create a landscape made by many hands.

‍

Make a Flower‍

You will need:

•  1 piece of A5 fabric

•  Black acrylic paint

•  A brush

•  A flower to observe

‍

1. Look‍

Choose a flower and spend a moment really looking at it. Notice its shape, petals, stem, leaves, shadows, and the way it occupies space.

‍2. Follow

Begin with one line.

Follow what your eyes see rather than trying to draw what you think a flower should look like. Your line can be delicate, bold, continuous, broken, slow, fast, precise, or uncertain.

‍3. Experiment

There is no right way to make the drawing. You might draw the whole flower, focus on one small part, repeat a line, or let the drawing become something unexpected. You don’t need to be an artist to take part.

‍4. Leave it to grow

When your drawing is finished, place it with the other drawings. Your flower will become part of a growing collective garden—a landscape shaped by the people who visit the exhibition.

‍5. Look again

Take a moment to see how your flower sits among the others. Notice how many different ways there are to look at, remember, and draw a flower.
‍

Thank you for adding your drawing to our garden!
